Here are ten essential tips to help you make the most of your UVA experience. With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll be well on your way to a successful semester:
1) Set Up a Workspace that Allows for Productivity
Your workspace should be a sanctuary for concentration and productivity. Whether it’s a corner of your living room or a dedicated office, ensure it's free from distractions. Try to separate school time from leisure time by keeping non-school activities out of your workspace.
2) Adopt Time Management Best Practices To Help Balance School, Work, and Family
Juggling school, work, and family can be a daunting task, but it’s doable with proper time management. There are many time management strategies; do a little research and experiment with the method that works for you. Remember to take breaks during your study sessions to avoid burnout. And, don’t be too hard on yourself if everything doesn’t get done perfectly. Your journey as a student is finite, and the sacrifices you make now are leading toward a greater goal.
Accept that some things may have to change temporarily – whether it's ordering takeout more often or letting the house become a little messier – it's all part of the process.
3) Be SMART and Set Goals
Start each semester with clear, achievable goals using the SMART system:
- Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve.
- Measurable: Determine how you’ll track your progress.
- Attainable: Make sure your goal is realistic.
- Realistic: Ensure the goal fits within your life’s demands.

Writing down your goals and keeping them visible can help keep you focused and motivated throughout the semester. A fun way to do this is to write them on colorful sticky notes to keep pasted on your computer or textbooks!

Canvas is your online classroom, so becoming familiar with it is essential. Start by downloading the Canvas app to your phone or tablet for easy access to course materials and announcements on the go. If your dashboard feels cluttered, customize it by starring the courses you need most. This way, your essential classes are front and center, and you won’t miss a beat.
Don't forget to enable Canvas notifications to stay informed about important class updates, due dates, and announcements.
6) Connect School and Work
If you're working full-time (or even part-time) while studying, look for ways to connect your work with your school assignments. Are there projects at work that align with your coursework?
